Nirmita Sharma

Nirmita Sharma completed her Master's in Botany from Sikkim University and her Bachelor of Science (Botany Honours) from St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling. Her topic of interests are ethnobotany, taxonomy, biochemistry, and plant physiology. She did her dissertation on "Studies on ethnobotany and phytochemicals of some pteridophytes of Darjeeling Himalayan region. She has worked with Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) as an intern in December 2023.

Photosynthetic Pigments: Types and Functions

March 24, 2026January 19, 2026 by Nirmita Sharma
Photosynthetic Pigments

Photosynthetic pigments are specific organic compounds that are necessary in the process of capturing light energy during photosynthesis. Located in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts, the pigments have two functions: … Read more

Chemiosmotic Hypothesis: Postulates, Mechanism, Applications

March 24, 2026January 18, 2026 by Nirmita Sharma
chemiosmotic hypothesis

The chemiosmotic hypothesis is a principal theory of bioenergetics according to which living cells produce energy in the form of the universal currency of energy called ATP. The hypothesis was … Read more

Cyclic photophosphorylation: Definition, Steps, Significance

March 24, 2026January 17, 2026 by Nirmita Sharma
Cyclic photophosphorylation

Cyclic photophosphorylation is a process of photosynthetic electron transport where electrons excited by Photosystem I (PSI) do not enter the NADP+ and are reduced to NADPH but are repumped instead … Read more

Non-cyclic Photophosphorylation: Steps, Factors, Applications

March 24, 2026January 16, 2026 by Nirmita Sharma
 Non-cyclic photophosphorylation

Non-cyclic photophosphorylation is a light-dependent process that synthesizes ATP and NADPH in photosynthesis through a unidirectional flow of electrons. In this process, electrons are released from water molecules and transferred … Read more

Nutrient Budget in Plants: Guide to Nutrient Management

January 15, 2026 by Nirmita Sharma
Nutrient Budget in Plants

A nutrient budget in plants is a systematic accounting process that tracks the movements of essential nutrients within the agricultural system. It involves measuring the inputs (nutrients added into the … Read more

Amphibolic Pathway: Definition, Examples, Regulation, Importance

March 24, 2026January 14, 2026 by Nirmita Sharma
Amphibolic Pathway

The term amphibolic pathway is derived from the Greek word “amphi,” meaning both, and bolic, meaning breaking down, i.e., a path that serves both catabolic and anabolic functions. The term … Read more

Photorespiration: Definition, Pathway, RuBisCO Role, Significance

March 24, 2026January 13, 2026 by Nirmita Sharma
Photorespiration

Photorespiration is a light-dependent metabolic pathway in plants where the oxygenation of ribulose-1, 5 5-bisphosphate (RuBP) to phosphoglycolate, a two-carbon metabolite, is catalysed by the enzyme RuBisCO, and this compound … Read more

Respiratory Quotient (RQ): Definition, Formula, Values, Applications

March 24, 2026January 12, 2026 by Nirmita Sharma
Respiratory Quotient (RQ)

Respiratory Quotient (RQ) is the ratio of the volume of carbon dioxide that is emitted to the volume of oxygen used during respiration. It provides insight into the kind of … Read more

Plant Dedifferentiation: Process, Mechanism, Applications

March 24, 2026January 11, 2026 by Nirmita Sharma
Plant Dedifferentiation

Dedifferentiation is a developmental process where differentiated and functionally specialized cells lose their stable characteristics and become actively divisible again. It is a process of returning cells that have already … Read more

Plant Differentiation vs. Dedifferentiation vs. Redifferentiation

March 24, 2026January 10, 2026 by Nirmita Sharma
Plant Differentiation, Dedifferentiation, and Redifferentiation

Comparative basis Plant Differentiation Plant Dedifferentiation Plant Redifferentiation Definition This process, by which unspecialized meristematic cells are differentiated into permanently existing structurally and functionally specialized cells, is referred to as … Read more
