Depending upon the tonicity of the fluid, the fluids can shift from the outside of the cell to the inside of the cell via osmosis. <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/osmosis-and-diffusion\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"41088\">Osmosis<\/a> is a net movement of water from a region of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration through a semipermeable membrane like a <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/cell-wall-plant-fungal-bacterial-structure-and-functions\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1587\">cell wall<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Solute is the number of dissolved solids in a solution consisting of proteins, carbohydrates, ions, hormones, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The total concentration of solute is known as <em>osmolarity<\/em>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low osmolarity in a solution has low solute particles per liter solution, while high osmolarity has high solute particles per liter solution.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Osmotic pressure is the hydrostatic pressure between solutions separated by a semipermeable membrane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"hypotonic-solution\"><\/span><strong>Hypotonic Solution<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The term hypotonic has two parts: hypo means &#8220;less\/under\/beneath,&#8221; and tonic means &#8220;stretching or concentration of a solution.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A solution with a lower solute concentration or lower osmotic pressure across a semipermeable membrane is called a hypotonic solution. A solution is known as hypotonic only when compared to the solute concentration of another solution.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"786\" src=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Hypotonic-Solution.jpeg\" alt=\"Hypotonic Solution\" class=\"wp-image-43963\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Hypotonic-Solution.jpeg 1500w, https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Hypotonic-Solution-300x157.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Hypotonic-Solution-1024x537.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Hypotonic-Solution-768x402.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hypotonic Solution<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists can determine which direction the water gradient and solute gradients will form with the help of measuring or knowing the osmolarity (concentration of a solution in the number of solutes per liter) of different solutions. Water enters the cell because of the difference in concentration between the compartments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When a cell is kept in a hypotonic solution, a net flow of water will enter the cell (the cell absorbs the hypotonic solution) through a cell wall.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The extracellular fluid has lower osmolarity and a higher water concentration in the solution than the cell does. It causes the water to follow its concentration gradient.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In this condition, the continuous <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/simple-diffusion\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"41075\">diffusion<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/water\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"41101\">water<\/a> molecule into the cell leads to cell swelling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both plant and animal cells are eukaryotic cells. The solution is hypotonic to the cell if the concentration of solutes outside the cell is lower than the concentration inside the cell, and the solutes are not able to pass through the membrane.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Animal cells cannot regulate their intake, whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/plant-cell\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"25209\">plant cells<\/a> can regulate. In contrast to animal cells, plant cells have a rigid cell wall, which prevents them from bursting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In contrast to the cell, the environment may be a hypotonic solution. The environment&#8217;s water tends to diffuse into the cell. The cell may lyse (split open) if the hypotonic solution in the environment is too strong.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cells have many mechanisms to regulate this flow of water.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hypotonic Solutions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>0.45% Saline (1\/2 NS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>0.225% Saline (1\/4 NS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>0.33% saline (1\/3 NS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"examples-of-hypotonic-solution\"><\/span><strong>Examples of Hypotonic solution<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1-body-fluids\"><\/span><strong>1. Body Fluids<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Using bodily fluids as a baseline, some examples of hypotonic solutions are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pure water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plain, unsweetened tea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sports drinks that are low in sugar and salt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2-animal-systems\"><\/span><strong>2. Animal Systems<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Animal cells lack cell walls, as they are more susceptible to rupture in strongly hypotonic environments.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Animals use their <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/skin-cells\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"43792\">skin<\/a> to provide a barrier between their internal organs and the external environment. Then, a network of membranes and <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/amino-acids-proteins\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"41109\">proteins<\/a> can control the fluid inside their body cavity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Animals have evolved osmoregulatory mechanisms to combat this. It allows them to keep solute concentrations within ideal limits and keep them plump and healthy without destroying them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marine animals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Numerous marine animals, such as sharks and sea turtles, have salt glands that allow them to eliminate extra salt from their bodies.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To get the water into their bodies, animals must drink salt water\/seawater.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, the salts must be concentrated and eliminated from the body to keep their internal environment more hypotonic than seawater.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Because of this adaption, they can absorb water from their surrounding and keep their cells hydrated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Protists<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/amoeba-proteus-nutrition-respiration-excretion-osmoregulation\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"40999\">Amoeba<\/a> and paramecia are examples of single-celled organisms that live in hypotonic environments.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They lack robust structural components like cell walls or <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/cytoskeleton\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1659\">cytoskeletons<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contractile <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/vacuoles-structure-types-and-functions\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1930\">vacuoles<\/a> are specialized structures that regulate the continuous inflow of water into cells by periodically releasing excess water to prevent the rupture of cells.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Freshwater fishes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Freshwater fishes such as catfish and trout thrive in hypotonic environments.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These fishes have developed systems to continuously expel excess water from their bodies, maintaining cellular <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/homeostasis\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"41128\">homeostasis<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Humans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The human renal system plays a crucial role in osmoregulation, particularly the kidneys.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Osmoregulation is the process of maintaining the solute concentration in an organism<em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It also maintains solutes in the body.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kidneys regulate blood osmotic pressure, maintaining water balance and essential mineral ions through intricate filtration and reabsorption processes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3-plant-and-fungi\"><\/span><strong>3. Plant and Fungi<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a hypotonic solution, plant cells respond similarly to <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/animal-cell-definition-structure-parts-functions-and-diagram\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"25128\">animal cells<\/a>. But the effects might not be as severe.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plants and fungi have developed mechanisms to live and survive in hypotonic environments.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They actively regulate the solute concentration around their cells to ensure that the extracellular environment is always a hypotonic solution compared to cells.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0This regulation results in turgid cells. Due to the influx of water, it exerts pressure against their cell walls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This turgidity helps to maintain the upright posture of plants and is crucial for non-woody plants that lack the structural support of lignified tissues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plants have rigid cell walls made of <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/microbial-degradation-of-cellulose\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31460\">cellulose<\/a>. It covers the <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/cell-plasma-membrane-structure-composition-functions\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1579\">plasma membrane<\/a>. It also contains a vacuole that stores excess water.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It plays a crucial role in maintaining this balance. As a result, the cells find it more difficult to lyse, but the extra pressure leads the cell&#8217;s sides to protrude.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/characteristics-of-fungi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"47\">fungi<\/a>, with their chitinous cell walls, control water inflow to maintain the structural integrity of their cells.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bryophytes, like mosses, are devoid of vascular tissues. macroscopic.\r\nBesides, other concepts like evolution and genomics further help in understanding the origin, evolution, and relationship among living beings.\r\nGenetics is another component of biology that helps in the differentiation of living beings based on their genomic composition.\r\nHomeostasis is another crucial unit of biology which suggests that all living organisms maintain a constant internal environment.\r\nNon-living parts of the world like the air, water, and soil have been closely related to the living world, which creates a close relationship between biology and the environment.\r\n\r\n<strong>Developmental biology is a branch of natural science that studies various interactions involved in the formation of the heterogeneous shape, structure, and size of different organisms that occur during the development of an embryo into an adult.<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>In short, developmental biology is a discipline that deals with the processes involved in the development of a multicellular organism as controlled by genetic information.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Developmental biology studies the mechanisms of development, differentiation, and growth in plants and animals at the cellular, molecular, genetic, and evolutionary levels.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Different forms of reproduction like sexual reproduction, asexual reproduction, metamorphosis, and germination of seeds and embryos are essential aspects of developmental biology.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Developmental biology is a fast-growing discipline that is interrelated with a vast array of disciplines like
