Each chromosome is made up of DNA tightly coiled many times around proteins called histones that support its structure. Chromosomes were first described by Strasburger (1815), and the term \u2018chromosome\u2019 was first used by Waldeyer in 1888. They appear as rod-shaped dark stained bodies during the metaphase stage of <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/mitosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mitosis<\/a> when cells are stained with a suitable basic dye and viewed under a <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/microscope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">light microscope<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"393\" src=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Chromosomes-Definition-Structure-Types-Model-Functions.jpeg\" alt=\"Chromosomes- Definition, Structure, Types, Model, Functions\" class=\"wp-image-36898\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Chromosomes-Definition-Structure-Types-Model-Functions.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Chromosomes-Definition-Structure-Types-Model-Functions-300x157.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chromosomes<\/strong> are the nuclear components of the special organization, individuality, and function that are capable of self-reproduction and play a vital role in heredity, mutation, variation and evolutionary development of the species.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each chromosome&nbsp;is&nbsp;made&nbsp;up of <a href=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/dna-deoxyribonucleic-acid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>DNA<\/strong><\/a> tightly coiled many times around proteins that support its structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The proteins that bind to the DNA to form eukaryotic chromosomes are traditionally divided into two classes: the histones and the non-histone chromosomal proteins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The complex of both classes of protein with the nuclear DNA of eukaryotic cells is known as chromatin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chromatin are a highly compacted structure consisting of packaged DNA and necessary so as to fit DNA into the nucleus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The assembly of DNA into chromatin involves a range of events, beginning with the formation of the basic unit, the nucleosome, and ulti\u00admately giving rise to a complex organization of specific domains within the nucleus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the first step of this process, DNA is condensed into an 11 nm fiber that represents an approximate 6-fold level of compaction. This is achieved through nucleosome assembly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The nucleosome is the smallest structural component of chromatin and is produced through interactions between DNA and histone proteins.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each nucleosome consists of histone octamer core, assembled from the histones H2A, H2B, H3 and H4 (or other histone variants in some cases) and a segment of DNA that wraps around the histone core. Adjacent nucleosomes are connected via \u201clinker DNA\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"structure-of-a-chromosome\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"structure-of-a-chromosome\"><\/span><strong>Structure of a Chromosome<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/microbenotes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Structure-of-Chromosome.jpeg\" alt=\"Structure of a Chromosome\" class=\"wp-image-30044\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Structure of a Chromosome<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In eukaryotes the&nbsp;chromosomes&nbsp;are&nbsp;multiple large, linear and are present in the nucleus of the cell.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each chromosome typically has one centromere and one or two arms that project from the centromere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Structurally, each chromosome is differen\u00adtiated into three parts\u2014<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Pellicle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Matrix<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chromonemata<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pellicle\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"pellicle\"><\/span><strong>Pellicle<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>It is the outer envelope around the substance of chromosome.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is very thin and is formed of achromatic substances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"matrix\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"matrix\"><\/span><strong>Matrix<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>It is the ground substance of chromosome which contains the chromonemata.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is also formed of non-genic materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chromonemata\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"chromonemata\"><\/span><strong>Chromonemata<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Embedded in the matrix of each chromosome are two identical, spirally coiled threads, the chromonemata.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The two chromonemata are also tightly coiled together that they appear as single thread of about 800A thickness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each chromonemata consists of about 8 mi\u00adcrofibrils, each of which is formed of a double helix of DNA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In mitotic metaphase chromosomes, the following structural feature (except chromomere) can be seen under the light mi\u00adcroscope:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(1) Chromatid,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(2) Chromonema,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(3) Chromomeres,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(4) Centromere,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(5) Secondary constriction or Nucleolar organizer,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(6) Telomere and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(7) Satellite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"centromere\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"centromere\"><\/span><strong>Centromere<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A small structure in the chromonema, marked by a constriction which is recognised as permanent structure in the chromosome is termed as the centromere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At this point the two chromonemata are joined together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is known as centromere or kinetochore or primary constriction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It divides the chromosome into two sections, or \u201carms.\u201d The short arm of the chromosome is labeled the \u201cp arm.\u201d The long arm of the chromosome is labeled the \u201cq arm.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its position is constant for a given type of chromosome and forms a feature of identification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In thin electron microscopic sections, the kinetochore shows a trilaminar structure, i.e., a 10 nm thick dense outer protein aceous layer, a middle layer of low density and a dense inner layer tightly bound to the centromere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The chromosomes are attached to spindle fibres at this region during cell division.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"secondary-constriction-or-nucleolar-organiser\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"secondary-constriction-or-nucleolar-organiser\"><\/span><strong>Secondary Constriction or Nucleolar Organiser<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The chromosome besides having the primary constriction or the centromere possesses second\u00adary constriction at any point of the chromosome.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Constant in their position and extent, these constrictions are useful in identifying particular chromosomes in a set.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The chromosome region distal to the secondary constriction i.e., the region between the secondary constriction and the nearest telomere is known as satellite.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Therefore, chromosomes having secondary constrictions are called satellite chromo\u00adsomes or sat-chromosomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nucleolus is always associated with the secondary constriction of sat-chromosomes. There\u00adfore, secondary constrictions are also called nucleolus organiser region (NOR) and sat-chromo\u00adsomes are often referred to as nucleolus organiser chromosomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"telomeres\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"telomeres\"><\/span><strong>Telomeres<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>These are specialized ends of a chromosome which exhibits physiological differentiation and polarity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each extremity of the chromosome due to its polarity prevents other chromosomal seg\u00adments to be fused with it. The chromosomal ends are known as the telomeres.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a chromosome breaks, the broken ends can fuse with each other due to lack of telomere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"types-of-chromosomes\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"types-of-chromosomes\"><\/span><strong>Types of Chromosomes<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-autosomes-and-sex-chromosomes\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"a-autosomes-and-sex-chromosomes\"><\/span><strong>A. Autosomes and Sex Chromosomes<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Human&nbsp;chromosomes&nbsp;are of two types- autosomes and sex&nbsp;chromosomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genetic traits that are linked to the sex of the person are passed on through the sex&nbsp;chromosomes. In humans, the shortest DNA molecule in a chromosome is about 1.6 cm and the longest is about 8.4 cm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The extensive packaging of DNA in chromosomes results from three levels of folding involving nucleosomes, 30 nm filaments and radial loops.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-nucleosomes\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"a-nucleosomes\"><\/span><strong>a. Nucleosomes<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The first level of packaging involves the binding of the chromosomal DNA to histones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overall, in chromosomes, the ratio of DNA to histones on a weight basis is approximately 1:1.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are five main types of histones called H1, H2A, H2B, H3 and H4.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Histones are very basic proteins; about 25% of their amino acids are lysine or arginine so histones have a large number of positively charged amino acid side-chains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These positively charged groups therefore bind to the negatively charged phosphate groups of DNA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"b-30-nm-fiber\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"b-30-nm-fiber\"><\/span><strong>b. 30 nm fiber<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If nuclei are lysed very gently, the chromatin is seen to exist as a 30 nm diameter fiber.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fiber is formed by a histone H1 molecule binding to the linker DNA of each nucleosome at the point where it enters and leaves the nucleosome.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The histone H1 molecules interact with each other, pulling the nucleosomes together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"c-radial-loops\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"c-radial-loops\"><\/span><strong>c. Females have two X chromosomes and males have one X and one Y chromosome. The sex of the child is determined by the chromosome passed down by the male. The proteins are also stored in the coiled structure of the chromosomes.
