organisms.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to Bergey\u2019s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, taxonomy consists of three separate but interrelated areas: classification, nomenclature, and identification.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Classification is the arrangement of organisms into taxonomic groups known as taxa on the basis of similarities or relationships.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Taxa include kingdoms or domains, divisions or phyla, classes, orders, families, genera, and species.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Closely related organisms (i.e., organisms having similar characteristics) are placed into the same taxon.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Organisms are categorized into larger groups based on their similarities and differences.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It should be noted that the classification of living organisms is a complex and controversial subject.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The Five Kingdom System of Classification<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Very early on, scientists began grouping the living organisms under different categories.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some biologists classified organisms into plants and animals.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ernst Haeckel, Robert Whittaker, and Carl Woese are some biologists who attempted a broader system of classification.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Amongst these, the Five Kingdom Classification proposed by Robert Whittaker stood out and is widely used.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 1969, Robert H. Whittaker proposed a Five- Kingdom System of Classification, in which all organisms are placed into five kingdoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"features-of-five-kingdom-system-of-classification\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Features of Five Kingdom System of Classification<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Whitaker proposed that organisms should be broadly divided into kingdoms, based on certain characters like the structure of the cell, mode of nutrition, the source of nutrition, interrelationship, body organization, and reproduction.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The kingdoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bacteria and archaea are in the <strong>Kingdom Monera<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Algae and protozoa are in the <strong>Kingdom Protista<\/strong> (organisms in this kingdom are referred to as protists)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fungi are in the <strong>Kingdom Fungi<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Plants are in the <strong>Kingdom Plantae<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Animals are in the <strong>Kingdom Animalia<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"kingdom-monera\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Kingdom Monera<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These organisms are prokaryotic and unicellular.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They do not have a well-defined nucleus and also lack cell organelles. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some organisms show the presence of cell wall while there are others without a cell wall. Consequently, some organisms are\u00a0autotrophic and others are heterotrophic.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Examples include\u00a0Bacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Mycoplasma.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"kingdom-protista\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Kingdom Protista<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Organisms grouped under Kingdom Protista are all unicellular, but eukaryotic organisms.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These are the simplest forms of eukaryotes that exhibit either autotrophic or heterotrophic mode of nutrition.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some organisms have appendages such as cilia or flagella or pseudopodia to move around.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some examples are\u00a0Diatoms, Protozoans like Amoeba, Paramecium<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"kingdom-fungi\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Kingdom Fungi<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Heterotrophic, Multicellular and Eukaryotic organisms are grouped under Kingdom Fungi.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their mode of nutrition is saprophytic as they use decaying organic matter as food.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They have cell walls, which are made up of a substance called Chitin.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fungi also form a symbiotic association with some blue-green algae.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yeast, Mushroom, Aspergillus\u00a0are examples of Fungi.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"kingdom-plantae\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Kingdom Plantae<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These are Eukaryotic, Multicellular organisms with a cell wall that is made up of cellulose.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They are autotrophs and synthesize their own food through the process of photosynthesis. This kingdom includes all plants.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Based on the body differentiation and presence or absence of specialized vascular tissue, Kingdom Plantae is divided into different divisions, namely Thallophyta, Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, Gymnosperms, and Angiosperms.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Examples are\u00a0Spirogyra, Ferns, Pines, and Mango Plant\u00a0etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"kingdom-animalia\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Kingdom Animalia<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This Kingdom includes organisms that are Multicellular,\u00a0Eukaryotic, without the presence of cell wall.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They have a heterotrophic mode of nutrition.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They also exhibit great diversity. Some organisms are simple while others have a complex body with specialized tissue differentiation and body organs.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Animal Kingdom is divided into many phyla and classes.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some of the phyla are\u00a0Porifera,\u00a0Coelenterata,\u00a0Arthropoda,\u00a0Echinodermata,\u00a0Chordata\u00a0etc. Examples \u2013\u00a0Hydra, Starfish, Earthworms, Monkeys, Birds\u00a0etc.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Viruses are not included in the Five-Kingdom System of Classification because they are not living cells; they are acellular.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Four of the five kingdoms consist of eukaryotic organisms.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each kingdom consists of divisions or phyla, which, in turn, are divided into classes, orders, families, genera, and species.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In some cases, species are subdivided into subspecies, their names consisting of a genus, a specific epithet, and a subspecific epithet (abbreviated \u201cssp.\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An example would be <em>H. influenzae<\/em> ssp. <em>aegyptius<\/em>, the most common cause of \u201cpinkeye.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although Whittaker\u2019s Five-Kingdom System of Classification has been a popular classification system for the past 30 or so years, not all scientists agree with it and other taxonomic classification schemes exist.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"limitations-or-objections-to-the-five-kingdom-system-of-classification\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Limitations or Objections to the Five Kingdom System of Classification<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some scientists do not agree that algae and protozoa should be placed into the same kingdom.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In some classification schemes, protozoa are placed into a subkingdom of the Animal Kingdom.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A distinction between unicellular and multicellular organisms is not possible in case of algae in this system of classification.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each group has so many diversities that it is difficult to keep them together. For example, monera and Protista contain both walled and wall-less organisms. Photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic organisms, cellular or filamentous organism.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Virus has not been included in this kingdom.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Archaebacteria differ from other bacteria in structure, composition and physiology.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mycoplasma are quite different form bacteria where they have been placed along with prokaryotes.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Symbiotic associations are not considered in this classification system. like cell theory, evolution, genetics, homeostasis, and chemical energy.\r\nBiology defines cell as the fundamental unit of life, which is common in all living beings, microscopic, and macroscopic.\r\nBesides, other concepts like evolution and genomics further help in understanding the origin, evolution, and relationship among living beings.\r\nGenetics is another component of biology that helps in the differentiation of living beings based on their genomic composition.\r\nHomeostasis is another crucial unit of biology which suggests that all living organisms maintain a constant internal environment.\r\nNon-living parts of the world like the air, water, and soil have been closely related to the living world, which creates a close relationship between biology and the environment.\r\n\r\n<strong>Developmental biology is a branch of natural science that studies various interactions involved in the formation of the heterogeneous shape, structure, and size of different organisms that occur during the development of an embryo into an adult.<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>In short, developmental biology is a discipline that deals with the processes involved in the development of a multicellular organism as controlled by genetic information.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Developmental biology studies the mechanisms of development, differentiation, and growth in plants and animals at the cellular, molecular, genetic, and evolutionary levels.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Different forms of reproduction like sexual reproduction, asexual reproduction, metamorphosis, and germination of
