14. Lecture Series for Preventing and Controlling COVID-19 by Coursera
In December 2019, a cluster of patients with pneumonia of unknown cause appeared in Wuhan, Hubei. Governments at all levels and the Department of Health Administration highly valued and rapidly organized the centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), medical institutions, and scientific research academies to conduct a survey, rescue, and collaborative research. This new antigen was quickly identified as a novel coronavirus, named as 2019-nCoV by World Health Organization (WHO). Meanwhile, pneumonia caused by it was named as novel coronavirus pneumonia. Implementing the decisions by the CPC Central Committee and State Council with Xi at the core, the whole country took comprehensive actions in social mobilization and deployment, taking epidemic control the most important work in the immediate future. The spread of the epidemic has been effectively controlled. However, novel coronavirus has spread to the whole world thereafter, so it called for closer international cooperation in epidemic prevention and control. Based on this situation, it was urgent to set a new MOOC program about COVID-19 and impart scientific knowledge of the disease to foreign students, undergraduate students, and all the other common people abroad, laying a solid foundation for the triumph of the war against COVID-19.
The novel coronavirus is a new strain of coronavirus that had never been found in humans before. This huge family already known can cause cold or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), and other severe diseases. The main signs and symptoms of the infected people include respiratory symptoms, fever, dry cough, shortness of breath, and dyspnea, etc. In severe and critical cases, there will appear pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death. The two-month war against COVID-19 has helped us accumulate loads of experience in disease prevention, control, diagnosis, and treatment, which can be shared with the whole world as a reference. In front of the need of our students and common people on COVID-19 prevention knowledge, the Health Science Center of Xi’an Jiaotong University has organized related experts to issue the English lectures of epidemic prevention and control for people at home and abroad and the international community. The contents are mainly about “Introduction, Diagnose, therapeutic Strategy and Prevention for COVID-19”. Through this course, we sincerely hope all our students and the common peoples of the world have scientific knowledge of COVID-19 and increased self-protection awareness, improving the international community’s capacity for the prevention and control of COVID-19. We should work in great unity, take science-based and targeted measures against the epidemic, and have confidence in conquering the virus.

15. COVID-19 – A clinical update by Coursera
As an expert in infectious diseases, editor of the Journal of Infectious Diseases and author of the textbook Infectious Diseases: A clinical short course, McGraw-Hill April 2020, I have been concerned about the misinformation being shared about the COVID-19 epidemic. How did this disease develop? Where did it come from? How does it cause diseases? The answers to these questions will be answered in the first video of module 1. The world has been startled and frightened by the rapid spread of this virus throughout the world. In Video 2 the epidemiology as presently understood is reviewed. This video will be periodically updated recognizing the rapid progression of the pandemic. Many want to know how does this disease present, what are the symptoms associated with COVID-19? How dangerous is COVID-19? Who is at risk of dying? All these questions are answered in Video 3. And finally how is this disease best treated and how can we slow the spread of the infection? These questions are answered in video 4. In addition to the videos multiple-choice questions are included to test your understanding and there is an epidemiology peer-reviewed exercise designed to teach you how this infection is spread and to show the power of the tracing of cases and isolating those who are infected. The second peer review exercise will encourage you to create a campaign to shift your countries culture to embrace behaviors that can lead to suppression of the epidemic, behaviors that will save lives. After completing this course you will be armed with the knowledge and skills to make a difference and help to bend the curve.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- Understand how this coronavirus invades respiratory epithelial cells, grows in the nasal passages, and spreads to alveoli to cause hypoxia.
- Describe what makes this coronavirus so infectious, how it has spread quickly throughout the world, and how best to stop its spread.
- Recognize the clinical symptoms of COVID-19 disease and be able to diagnose this disease
- List the recommended treatments for COVD-19, as well as the treatments under investigation

17. Mechanical Ventilation for COVID-19 by edX
This course will help prepare licensed non-ICU hospital clinicians to support critical care respiratory therapists, physicians, and nurses in caring for a patient who is receiving mechanical ventilation. Given the increasing number of patients contracting COVID-19 and developing pneumonia, the medical system is and will continue to be, in dire need of licensed medical professionals who can support the care for these patients.
Continuing Education
* Medical professionals who complete the course and pass a brief quiz can claim up to three continuing education credit hours. Eligible learners can claim three AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™ (physicians), nursing CEU credits, or a certificate of attendance for allied health professionals and other learners. *
This course provides general information about mechanical ventilation. It is intended for licensed medical professionals. Patient needs and clinical care settings vary, and the information provided is not intended as medical, diagnostic, or treatment advice. Ventilators should be used under the supervision of a qualified licensed medical professional. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for the particular device you are using and the product information sheet for any drug administered. This subject is complex and evolving. The authors and providers of this course do not warrant that the information provided is accurate in every respect or complete and disclaim responsibility for your use and application of the information.
As medical professionals from all over the U.S. and from every discipline come together to fight the COVID-19 virus, now is the time to share knowledge and tools. Helping prepare non-ICU hospital personnel to help in the operation of a mechanical ventilator will make us stronger, giving us all an extra pair of hands to lean on for support. Our patients depend on us.
There is no question that respiratory therapists and critical care physicians and nurses are the experts for managing the care for critically ill patients. However, during extreme times like this, the patient surge capacity may exceed the number of available trained personnel. And so, now is the time to come together.
This course is a great primer for non-ICU physicians and other clinicians who are asked to staff critical care areas. It will help these professionals better understand the basic concepts of mechanical ventilation and care for the patient receiving mechanical ventilation. We recognize the ever-expanding number of patients contracting COVID-19 and developing pneumonia as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of this, the medical system will need clinicians that can assist in operating mechanical ventilators. We encourage all non-ICU clinicians to consider completing this course, readying themselves to best help their colleagues and patients on the front lines of this virus.
